Hanging out at EduSquare

Hanging out with Sapphire, HeyJude and Slammed at Edusquare. This space provides some handy resources for educators, including landmarks and leads to web-based resources.

However, this is definitely an area of the Islands of jokaydia that I would like to start developing further and would love to hear your ideas! ;)

Finishing touches

I found Leroy and Konrad on the Virtual Classroom space this morning making some final touches and adding things like URL givers and Notecards.

The space is looking brilliant and I’m really looking forward to hearing the guys discuss where this project has taken them, and the strategies and structures they’ve created.

Stay tuned… there’ll be a workshop or event soon.

Newbie Session and Maintaining my Sense of Wonder

Jo has already written about the hugely successful April Festival on jokaydia which took place last weekend, but I’d like to add a few words about the Newbie Session that she asked me to help out with. It was very inspiring to be with a group of visitors who are keen to start exploring the educational potential of Second Life. One of the most important things that I learned during that session was not to take Second Life for granted. Interacting with those who are new to Second Life reminded me how inspired I was when I first created my avatar and started exploring some of the educational spaces inworld. It was like discovering a new frontier - it was a time to reflect on what I’d accomplished as an educator in the physical and online world, and to also think about the possibilities that await in the virtual environment of Second Life. In other words, it was a time to push my own thinking about education.

As I reflect on that Newbie Session last week, I am reminded of the wide-eyed enthusiasm of our guests and the importance of that almost child-like sense of wonder and exploration that we all experience when we first discover Second Life.

jokaydia Newbie Session (April 18, 2008)

One thing that helps me keep that sense of wonder alive and makes me feel like a perpetual SL newbie is my passion for inworld photography and machinima. If you’re interested in my work, feel free to visit the home of my March Studios at blip.tv or my growing collection of Second Life landscape photography.

Finally, here’s a video to celebrate last week’s festival and, specifically, the magical Newbie Session balloon ride that reminded me of why I love Second Life: As our first Educator-in-Residence continues to demonstrate, it’s a place where the only limit is our creativity (… and the number of prims at our disposal :-) ):

Welcome Scottlo Scorbal!

What a great way to end the weekend!…. Here I am welcoming yet another new resident to the Islands of jokaydia! Introducing Scottlo Scorbal, who is based in Japan in real life, and has taken up a plot on jokaydia II.

Titled the ‘Narrative Analysis Research Central Office’ (NARCO), Im sure Scottlo’s plot will be a very interesting spot to visit! He is planning to explore a number of projects, including using Second Life as a venue for recording live podcasts, and also to explore storytelling and narrative analysis, particularly working with educators to record their professional experiences in the classroom.

To find out more about Scottlo, check out his blog - Meet Scottlo Scorbal, where he is recording his experiences in Second Life via podcast… already a great listen!

Welcome to jokaydia, Scottlo! Thanks for joining us! ;)

Sir Al of jokaydia!

From the lovely Pandora, jokaydia’s very own machinimist, check out this fantastic video!

It features one of our newest friends in Second Life - Sir Al of jokaydia, a knight in shining white armour (costume by Gnu, too!).

Inde Clip - gorgeous kitteh!

Look at the gorgeous kitteh I met on jokaydia this morning. What a fantastic avatar!

HiperCapsulas on jokaydia!

Our newest resident, marlonj Myers has been busy! He only took control of his new parcel on jokaydia a few days ago, but has already created a great space which is well integrated with his web presence.

He’s titled his project inworld too - ‘The HiperGalaxia Project: An Open Place for Open Ideas.’ Exciting, huh!?! ;)

Well done marlonj! The ‘HiperGalaxia’ space on jokaydia is already looking fantastic! I can’t wait to see your project unfold!

May Day on the Islands of jokaydia!

community.jpg

One of the topics we discussed at our last community meeting was the need to have more social events and opportunities for jokaydians to get to know each other. In response to that, I’ve started planning a whole series of events which we will be publishing soon, but I wanted to announce our first social, so everyone has the chance to get it into their diaries! ;)

We’ll be holding a beachside social and informal chat on the Islands of jokaydia on Thurs 1 May at 9pm AEST. (4:00am SLT). You can check your local time here. To join in, meet us on jokaydia beach! (SLurl)

The aim of this event is to provide an opportunity for both our jokaydia residents and visitors to join us for some fun and support. Bring your favourite SL gadget, outfit or new toy to show-off or share a new idea or project you are working on.

Seeya there!

Seen over jokaydia…..

A white knight and his trusty stead! ;)
