Events in Second Life: What’s On This Week!?

jokaydesk.jpg

In the interests of connecting and sharing with the broader edu community in Second Life, I’ve decided to start some regular postings about events happening in-world. I’m also doing this to answer a question I regularly get asked….. “Where/how can I find things to do in Second Life?

Of course my first answer is come and visit us at jokaydia or check out our Educational Uses resource (hehe)…. but hopefully this will provide everyone with some leads to fun, informative events in Second Life and new opportunities to network.

Please note: This is not an exhaustive list, nor a reliable service! I would never attempt to try to aggregate SL Edu Events, as there’s already a great service being provided by Bruce Sommerville. If you’re really interested in immersing yourself in edu community events you should subscribe! These posts are just an attempt to point to some of the events coming up that I think might be of interest to our community… and will also help me to remember to attend more events in Second Life!

Times listed below are Australian EST time and SL/PST. Remember to check your local time!

So what’s on this week……

Monday 14 April, 9.35pm AEST: CSI NY on TV in Australia.

The infamous episode of CSI New York that features Second Life is finally screening in Australia tonight on Channel 9 at 9.35pm (AEST). For those who aren’t aware of this story, the episode features SL and a CSI site was developed in SL to coincide with the episode’s screening in the US.

Tuesday 15 April, 9.00am AEST: NMC Teacher Buzz Session with Graham Mills demoing his StoryMachine and more! (SL Time: Mon 14 Apr 4pm SLT/PST)

Graham Mills will be demonstrating StoryMachine, a gadget that rezzes prim-based nodes to order from a simple notecard-based script. As with other similar tools, the nodes can be linked using particle streams. StoryMachine, however, is a little different in that its script can change the display *dynamically* as well as link to other media such as images and audio clips. Graham will discuss some of the possible applications of StoryMachine now and in the future, as well as describing other approaches he is experimenting with in Second Life.

Wednesday 16 April, 11am AEST: ISTE Speaker Series Session: Fireside Chat with Sidewinder Linden (SL Time: Tues 15 April, 6 PM SLT/PST)

An open discussion on Second Life and the new Havok4 physics engine as a platform for education.

Wednesday 16 April, 7pm AEST: SLoodle 101 (SL Time: Wed 16 April, 2am – 3am SLT/PST)

Regular weekly in-world class introducing the Sloodle tools, and offering tips/guidance on how to configure and use them. Facilitator: Peter Bloomfield (SL: Pedro McMillan).

Sunday 20 April, 6am AEST: Sophrosyne’s Saturday Salon: Hamlet Au (SL Time: Sat 19 April, 1-2:30pm SLT/PST)

“New World Notes” blogger, former Linden and author of The Making of Second Life Hamlet Au (Wagner James Au) will be the Spotlight Guest at Sophrosyne’s Saturday Salon, part of the Extropia Core project. (Note: My bet is this one will be packed… so arrive early if you’re keen to attend. Ugh – early mornings!)

So that’s what I’ll be trying to make it to in SL this week. (So much to do, so little time!) If you’ve got an event you’d like to share please feel free to add details in the comments. Special thanks to Debbie McCormick, Nick Noakes, Bruce Sommerville for event leads.
