About Joie: I’m a professional educator stepping out of the K-12 classroom as a technology coordinator to work for PBS. My primary role as Director of School Services include training educators using KLRN Connect/Discovery Education streaming for the classroom. I also market PBS TeacherLine online professional development, host conferences and workshops, send out a monthly newsletter, manage outreach projects in the community, and produce on-air and online content for educators.

Projects: Currently involved in several projects in Second Life including events surrounding the upcoming National Educational Computing conference. I am also project lead on the presence for PBS TeacherLine of Texas coming to ISTE Island. I am researching delivery methods for professional development and professional learning networks and have established my and my organisation’s presence here to further this work. My build on jokaydia is a meeting house for all educators to sit back and chat. Or if quiet respite is needed to sort inventory, read notecards, or practice SL skills, please make yourself at home at 2477 Education Place anytime.

About Konrad: Konrad Glogowski is a teacher and researcher interested in exploring the role of online communities in adolescent literacy and teacher professional development. His doctoral research focused on building online communities of learners to facilitate the development of literacy skills at the senior elementary level. Konrad also works as a Language Arts teacher and has been involved in e-learning initiatives with the Toronto Catholic District School Board and York University’s English Language Institute (YUELI). He is the recipient of the 2005 International Educational Blogging Award and his work has been featured on CBC Radio. Konrad has presented his research at numerous educational conferences and spent the last seven years building and researching online communities of writers at the middle school and high school levels. He is passionate about 21st century learning and helping teachers successfully integrate technology in a variety of subject areas.

Projects: I am interested in using Second Life as a teaching and learning platform. I believe that it has great potential in K12 education and can be valuable as a teacher professional development tool. I am interested in creating virtual learning communities and immersive environments that engage and empower learners. I am also exploring the potential of SL to raise awareness of contemporary global issues and provide opportunities to learn about them through art installations and exhibitions.
