The jokaydia Landing Point includes information about our current events, and includes teleports and landmark givers linking to our various resources. Visitors are welcome at the jokaydia Landing point at any time.

Members of the ‘jokaydia News and Info’ Group in Second Life are welcome to make the jokaydia Landing Point their ‘Home‘. You will need to have the group selected as your ‘active group’ (eg. you should see ‘jokaydia Community Member’ above your avatars head) in order to set ‘Home’ to the jokaydia Landing Point.

The jokaydia Head Office space is jokay Wollongong’s personal space in Second Life, and is used as a workspace and a presentation space for various workshops and presentations (see the Recent Projects page for info). You can view various slides and resources at the office.

jokay Wollongong can often be found on the Islands of jokaydia working and/or socialising. Please come and say hello! She also posts ‘Office Hours’ on the noticboard at the Head Office on a semi-regular basis and welcomes visitors who wish to ask questions or get assistance at those times.

The Newbie Gardens have been created to provide a simple space for new Second Life residents to gain some basic skills. We have created a comfortable garden space, which houses a collection of slides which describe the basic skills residents need for communication, movement and navigation.

You are also welcome to grab a virtual coffee and meet with friends here.

Edusquare has been created to provide a meeting point and resource space for Educators who are working in Second Life. It is surrounded by our resident’s spaces and provides several resources including the Educational Landmarks Wall, which provides landmarks to a wide range of educational projects in Second Life.

Visitors and residents are welcome to use this space for informal meetups and social events. jokaydia Residents are also welcome to share information about their projects in EduSquare. Please contact jokay Wollongong for further info.

The jokaydia Conference Centre is a large, multi-purpose space designed to host Second Life events. It can be setup in a range of different ways, including ‘Boardroom’, ‘Presentation’, ‘Discussion’ or ‘Social’ layouts and includes slideviewers, video and twitter screens. We are also able to provide audio streaming where neccessary.

In recent months, the jokaydia Conference Centre has hosted Go Virtual! for NSW Learncope (2007), Social Events for the FLNW2008 Event, BYU Students in SL with Konrad March (pictured) and a session for the Linux AU Conference 2008.

The jokaydia Conference Centre is available for conferences and events with support at low-cost. Please contact jokay Wollongong for further information.

Residents on the Islands of jokaydia are welcome to use the Conference Centre at any time. Please use the Google Events Calendar to schedule your event by either logging in directly or using the Events Booking Form. We appreciate at least 5 days in advance.

salon.jpgVirtual Hairdressing Salon

Created for TAFE NSW - Hairdressing Program, 2007.

The Virtual Hairdressing Salon was setup as part of a project undertaken for the TAFE NSW Hairdressing Program in 2007. It provides an immersive environments where Foundation Hairdressing students could undertake roleplaying focussed on developing knowledge of OH&S and skills in communicating with work colleagues and clients.

In 2007, the Virtual Hairdressing Salon was used to create artwork for inclusion in CD-rom based resources which are currently available for Hairdressing students via the TAFE NSW Hairdressing Program. Images from the project can be viewed on Flickr.

Created to support Sean FitzGerald’s presentation ‘Virtual Worlds - Trends and Opportunities’ for NSW Learnscope’s Regional Event Go Virtual 07! Teaching and Learning in Virtual Worlds for VET in September 2007, the Virtual World’s Presentation Platform is an experiment in using Second Life to create immersive, engaging 3D environment for presentations on virtual worlds. You can read more about the project here.

The platform includes extensive information on the use of virtual worlds in education, including interactive components, and can be used by other residents to demonstrate virtual worlds to their colleagues.

drums.jpgVirtual Drum Circle

The Virtual Drum Circle includes a collection of interactive drums created by Second Life resident Robbie Dingo.

The space and interactive musical instruments situated here provide a fun, interactive way to introduce new residents and tour participants to one of the types of immersive, social activities that residents are able to participate in, and is also a relaxed space to hang out and meet with friends.

edublogs.jpgInternational Edublog Awards Nominees Display 2007

The International Edublog Awards Nominees Display was created in November 2007 and includes links to all of the nominees in the International Edublog Awards 2007. The Display provided a meeting point and promotional tour during the voting period for the awards, and is also a useful example of how Second Life can be used to create displays, poster sessions and social spaces to support real life and virtual events.

The Nominees Display will be demolished in May 2007 to make way for new project spaces.

The Giant Chair provides a discreet space for meetings and discussions and is situated behind the jokaydia Conference Centre. It provides lovely views of the ocean, and can be used by residents for quick, informal meetings and discussions. The Giant Chair is a good example of use of freely available resources to create a simple, but useful meeting space in Second Life. It includes a holodeck tool to add privacy screens, slideviewes and video screens and seating.

The jokaydia Sandbox provides a free and open space for all Second Life residents to build and experiment. Residents are welcome to come to the Sandbox for individual experimentation, as well as group builds and classes.

jokaydia Beach is a relaxed and informal area, which is designed as a space for residents and visitors to meet, chat and hang out. We also hold informal discussions around the campfire here from time to time.

A barbecue area and meeting space is also included nearby, which can provide an informal backdrop for small meetings or classes.

The jokaydia Fairy Garden is a magical space designed to be used by jokaydia Residents on an informal basis. Hidden amongst the trees on the hill near the Art Gallery, this space includes some comfy spots to sit and socialise with friends.

The jokaydia Fair Garden is a good example of how informal, whimsical spaces can be used to facilitate social interactions in virtual worlds, and illustrates the importance of creating spaces which are interesting to interact and meet and the possibilities for using informal spaces to host learning activities.

The jokaydia Discussion Circle is situated near the fairy garden and provides a magicla space for presenations and events. Visitors and residents are welcome to meet here informally, and the space is also available for use for conferences, meetings and presentations.

The Discussion Circle space seats avatars on comfy mushrooms and is equipped with tools for sharing slides and videos. Audio streming can also be provided where neccessary.

The jokaydia Discussion Circle is also available for classes and events with support at low-cost. Please contact jokay Wollongong for further information.

The jokaydia Gallery Space is a multi-purpose space which is designed to house exhibitions and displays of our communities works in Second Life. It will be used to present an short-term exhibitions on an ongoing basis.

Additional to the Gallery areas, this space has been equipped with holodeck tools which allow for various furniture configurations to support a number of different event styles including ‘Boardroom’, ‘Presentation Style’ and ‘Discussion Circle’. All residents on the Islands of jokaydia have been included in the access lists and can use the holodeck tools.

The jokaydia Art Gallery is also available for classes and events with support at low-cost. Please contact jokay Wollongong for further information.

educator.jpgEducator In-Residence Workshop Space

The Educator In-Residence Workshop Space has been set up to provide a space to support innovative educational projects in Second Life. It will be given to various Second Life residents on a short term basis for use as a workshop to experiments, debate, share and display educational projects being developed in Second Life.

Currently, the Educator In-Residence Workshop Space is being used to support the Virtual Classroom Project which is being co-ordinated by jokaydia resident Konrad Glogowski aka Konrad March. Our first educator-in-residence is Leigh Blackall aka Leroy Goalpost in Second Life. For further info about this exciting project, visit the Virtual Classroom Project page.
